Description of CE Program/Activity
Course Description:Cortical Vision Impairment (CVI) is the leading cause of non-ocular visual impairment in children in the US. Information about CVI changes quickly as the research surrounding this visual impairment increases. It is critical that teachers for the visually impaired and orientation and mobility specialists understand the educational implications of CVI, as well as the assessment needs of students with CVI. This course provides foundational information about the ten characteristics of CVI, the CVI Range and assessment practices, the three phases of CVI and implementation of educational interventions to support students with CVI. Strategies for teaming and collaboration will be discussed as well. Time will be spent learning together as well as constructing specific activities for your students, classroom, and/ or learning environment. The Teachers Learning and Collaborating model (TLC) will be used for coaching and support. Two face to face sessions will take place, as well as classes utilizing distance technology and videotaping. This class is being offered for both license renewal and graduate credit. Course Learning Objectives:Participants will gain knowledge of the common causes and etiology of Cortical Vision Impairment (CVI). Participants will demonstrate the skill to accurately communicate how the students performance on the CVI Range impacts instructional decision making and access to the general education curriculum via a written report.Participants will be able to align a students CVI Range score with the appropriate CVI phase. Participants will demonstrate and implement appropriate accommodations for a students CVI phase/needs.
