LBB - Lighthouse of the Big Bend located in Tallahassee, Florida is seeking a Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist (COMS) to provide individualized training to our clients who are blind or visually impaired. The COMS instructor will teach clients to travel safely and independently and to orient within their space. They work closely with clients and families to develop and implement individualized plans to help clients navigate their environment safely and independently.

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • ·        Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Orientation & Mobility.
  • ·        COMS certification through ACVREP.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • ·        Excellent report writing and computer skills required.
  • ·        Working experience with databases for entering case notes and reports.
  • ·        Excellent people skills, good judgment, attention to detail, ability to prioritize & meet deadlines, and handle confidential material.
  • ·        Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
  • ·        Knowledge of a second language helpful but not required.

The mission of LBB is to enhance the lives of individuals who live with vision loss in the Big Bend area through direct services, community engagement, and education. LBB serves individuals, from birth through life, who are legally blind and live in one the following counties: Franklin, Gadsden, Hamilton, Jefferson, Lafayette, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Suwannee, Taylor, or Wakulla. 

Compensation commensurate with experience. The organization has vehicles available for itinerant work.
