Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience working as SSP for Deafblind and/or related field working with Deafblind.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) Level 3.5 or Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI): Intermediate Plus is required for entry into position.
  • Demonstrated MS Office suite computer proficiency including emails, documents, presentations, and spreadsheets.


Knowledge of:

  • Principles and best practices of program planning, management, and evaluation. 
  • Access issues concerning deafblind individuals with varying degrees of hearing loss and vision loss as well as knowledge of Deafblind culture and history. 
  • Administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as managing files and records, record retention, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology.

Ability to:

  • Adhere to Commonwealth of Virginia requirements and program operating procedures. 
  • Interact and communicate effectively within a staff teamwork environment and other stakeholders such as SSPs, educators, professionals, administrators and local DB/D/HH communities and maintain relationships. 
  • Communicate effectively in American Sign Language with deaf and deafblind clients, staff and other stakeholders including at least one or more of the following communication modalities with deafblind: Tactile, Protractile, and/or Hepatics.
  • Communicate directly with these stakeholders without an interpreter is essential to perform the duties. 
  • Apply critical thinking skills when problem solving. Effective writing skills necessary to complete reports and evaluations. 
  • Applies leadership skills to recruit, supervise, manage and lead a team of SSP. 
  • Maintain a familiarity with and understanding of the job scheduling process from start to finish and have ability to effectively troubleshoot scheduling conflicts. 
  • Will complete SSP training within one month of hire

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred bachelor's degree in Deaf Education, ASL, Interpreting, deaf studies, rehabilitation, counseling, human services or a related field.
