Return to view all job openingsThe purpose of this position is to engage with clients and other rehabilitation team members to create a safe, clean, supportive residential/recreational experience throughout the entire Campus Life Division environment, promoting health, wellness and recreation, positive social, interpersonal and self-management skills. Through on-going residential/recreational environment engagement with Campus Life Associates, each client will be given the opportunity to explore, learn, and practice needed skills to enhance relevant personal independence to promote vocational success.
Plan, organize, lead and evaluate recreational and wellness activities for the students of WWRC. Provide creative quality recreational opportunities in assigned select recreation groups (for students not involved in the general recreation program due to emotional, cultural, behavioral, or physical disabilities) and in the general recreation program. To provide activities in the areas of Games, Sports and Athletics (coaching and teaching skills for team sports) and Outdoor recreational programming such as camping, hiking, tennis, Lake activities, etc. To provide programming in a safe and therapeutic environment. Use of coaching and instructional methods to develop leisure awareness, skill development and positive group behaviors for successful leisure and vocational functioning providing therapeutic outings for community re-integration. To maintain a working knowledge of the residence halls for coverage as needed. To provide programming and coverage in both Residence and Recreation Halls as needed for safe and therapeutic environment. To promote safe, clean and supportive environment promoting positive social, interpersonal and self-management skills. Encouraging opportunities to learn needed skills to promote and enhance independence. Serve as aquatics coordinator within the recreation services department at WWRC. Safely and effectively manage all aspects of the pool at WWRC.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalency required and a valid Virginia driver’s license. Lifeguarding Certification. Experience working with individuals with a variety of disabilities in a recreation and/or rehabilitation setting (May Include coaching and/or teaching). This position is designated to provide first aid, CPR and AED only as a collateral duty to routine work assignments, responding solely to injuries resulting from workplace incidents, generally at the location where the incident occurred, until emergency personnel arrive on the scene. Working knowledge to implement on-going recreation programs and skill development with an emphasis on team sports in the area of games sports and athletics, outdoor recreation, community outings, special events, etc. Good basic computer skills.
Basic activity skills, knowledge of concepts and practices of community recreation and wellness. Ability to meet the requirements of and function as a certified lifeguard. Ability to meet the requirements of and function as the WWRC certified pool operator or within 3 months of hire. Skills in assessing individual and group needs and ability to plan and implement programs to meet those needs; to relate positively to people with disabilities and knowledge of disabilities served. Good oral and written communication skill and organization/time management skills. Knowledge of confidentiality and boundary issues; of safety awareness in a recreational setting; of Campus Life Division’s Residential Housing environment(s) and expectation(s) for coverage as needed. Ability to foster a safe, clean and supportive environment promoting positive social, interpersonal and self-management skills encouraging opportunities to learn needed skills to promote and enhance personal independence. Ability to assess environmental factors and safety hazards while conducting day to day operations and to foster the interdisciplinary team approach.
The incumbent understands that pre-exposure hepatitis B vaccination is not being provided, but that post-exposure hepatitis B vaccination will be provided, and they will complete annual blood borne pathogens training in accordance with the OSHA standard.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prefer BS degree in recreation or related field (with some experience in recreational setting). Pool Operator Certification or equivalent experience preferred. Knowledge and experience with Restorative Practices/ Restorative Justice preferred.
Hiring Range: Maximum salary $40,000
