RESPONSIBILITIES
Foster a supportive, inclusive, and accessible learning environment; support social interaction and self-advocacy
Assessing students’ O&M skills upon start of the program to determine their level of independence and safety.
Instruction in skills and concepts to enable them to travel as independently as possible during the program. Teaching skills for travel with safety, proficiency and confidence in familiar and unfamiliar environments.
Ensuring students’ safety during the program while fostering maximum independence.
Preparing or using equipment and materials as appropriate to promote development of O&M skills.
Training non-COMS staff in safe travel techniques for students
Running small group activities and teaching related skills
Maintaining a clean and organized household environment in the dorm
Supervising and guiding students during program outings
Documenting student progress daily
Perform other related tasks as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
M.Ed. in Orientation & Mobility and ACVREP COMS certification required (or eligible).
Experience with school-aged children.
Excellent organization, interpersonal and communication skills are a must, as is a working knowledge of current mainstream, adaptive travel technologies and resources for teaching low vision & nonvisual learners.
Valid driver’s license is required.
