Rehabilitation Teacher:

 

Provide training in the areas of emotional adjustment to CVHL, travel skills, skills of daily living, homemaking skills, personal management, communication skills including sign language, support systems and vocational training; maintaining teaching skills including learning and teaching to read and write uncontracted braille; working collaboratively with other professional staff; developing and maintaining referral resources; completing and maintaining case documentation of teacher service delivery; special projects.

 

Qualifications: Must be able to effectively communicate in sign language. Are certified as a Vision Rehabilitation Therapist (CVRT), Low Vision Specialist (CLVS) or Teacher for the Visually Impaired (CTVI) by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education Professionals (ACVREP); or are licensed as an occupational therapist with training in blindness.

Orientation and Mobility Trainer:

 

Work closely with people who have combined vision and hearing loss to help them develop the skills necessary for independent and safe travel. The use of the Support Service Provider technique, the long cane, and electronic travel aids are some of the systematic techniques by which blind or visually impaired people orient themselves to their surroundings and move about safely and efficiently. Orientation and Mobility Specialists also monitor and support the development of the basic concepts, sensory skills and protective techniques for safe travel.

 

Daily professional activities of Orientation and Mobility Specialists may include interviewing and making assessments and referrals as well as providing direct, one-on-one orientation and mobility services.

 

Qualification: Must be able to communicate effectively in sign language. Are certified in orientation and mobility service provision by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education Professionals (ACVREP), or National Blindness Professional Certification Board (NBPCB).
