The International Institute for the Brain (iBRAIN) is one of the largest brain-injury special education programs in the world based in New York City and is expanding to?add an out-patient clinic as well as growing its research efforts for the brain injury and brain-based disorders community. iBRAIN’s mission is to research, develop and?implement special education and related services for students with brain injury and brain-based disorders. 

 

Job Description: The Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) will be working within a multi-disciplinary team to provide 1:1 service to students who have brain injuries or brain-based disorders who and are medically-fragile. Students are nonverbal, non-ambulatory, and may have tracheostomies, ventilators and/or g-tubes for feeding. Most of the students have seizure disorders as well. Reports to: Related Services Director and Program Director 

Location: New York, New York 

 

Responsibilities and Requirements:? 

• Provide direct instruction and consultation in O&M to students who are blind or visually impaired with additional disabilities 

• Prepare Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and reports, evaluating and monitoring student progress, use IEP Direct (software application) to code quarterly?

• Provide instruction individually, on a 1:1 basis, consulting with classroom staff to integrate orientation and mobility goals into classroom activities 

• Modify instructional materials, techniques and assessments appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students 

• Application of current techniques in the teaching of O & M skills and the ability to apply them to students with visual impairments and students with disabilities 3-21?

• Reviews progress notes, daily session notes, insurance and eye reports, new student evaluations, re-evaluations, and annual reports/IEPs.? 

• Coordinates coverage for staff absences? 

• Leads in-services for individuals of other disciplines at iBrain to help educate about COMS needs of students

• Assumes such other clinical, research and supervisory duties as may be assigned from time to time 

 

 

Qualifications:  

• Current O&M certification by ACVREP (COMS) or National Orientation and Mobility Certification (NOMC) 

 

• Bachelor’s Degree (GPA: 3.0) 

 

• Experience working in a school/pediatric setting with students with special needs including students with blindness/visual impairment and multiple disabilities 

 

 

Salary: $75,00-$85,000
