Responsibilities of Lead Orientation and Mobility Instructor:

The Orientation and Mobility/Home Management Supervisor will provide supervision, guidance, and training to Orientation and Mobility staff and Home Management staff agency wide, as well as managing an assigned caseload to deliver O&M instruction to consumers who are preparing for employment or attending school. It will also be your job to assist with the development of lesson plans and training plans, assessing consumers training needs, and managing and monitoring O&M and Home Management referrals and contracts.

 

  • Supervise O&M and Mobility/Home Management Instructors statewide to ensure quality instruction. Act as O&M expert to advise on O&M best practices. Provide guidance on Home management techniques and assistive equipment that will be beneficial to consumer independence. Promote consumer centered philosophy and implement strategies to improve the SCCB Adjustment to Blindness Training Program. Coordinate with a multidisciplinary team including training staff, VR Counselors, and employers.
  • Observe Instructor classes and conduct performance evaluations in a timely and quality manner. Enhance instructional methods and assist in developing Orientation and Mobility and Home Management curriculum. Facilitate staff professional development as needed. Participate in case staffings, maintain communication with other staff, make O&M recommendations, and provides O&M consultation to workforce partners.
  • Assist in managing O&M referrals and contracts. Monitor assigned vendors for service provision. 
  • Provide O&M instruction in all training phases to blind and visually impaired consumers and orient consumers to areas of interest. Implement comprehensive lesson plans, O&M activities, and O&M assignments in areas of sighted guide, self-protective techniques, on-campus/off campus travel, street crossings, public transportation, and travel in commercial and residential settings. Introduce consumers the use of cardinal directions, landmarks, and assistive technology devices. Document assessments, progress notes, and any additional documentation n the AWARE Case Management System.

A bachelor's degree and professional experience in human services or social services programs.  Agency Required: Current and active National Orientation and Mobility Certification (NOMC) or be a Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialists (COMS) and have experience teaching orientation and mobility to blind and visually impaired individuals.  

Additional Requirements:
 

Must be aware of agency's policies and procedures, structured discovery principals and the American with Disabilities Act, and Federal and State laws as they relate to vocational rehabilitation. Must demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills, organizational skills, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with consumers, staff, and community partners. Ability to use sound judgement and provide supervision and guidance to Orientation and Mobility and Home Management staff and associated contractors statewide. 

 

Work involves travel 2-4 days per week and occasional overnight travel. May require evenings and weekend shifts. Occasionally ascends/descends stairs. Constantly positions self to provide orientation and mobility instruction to consumers. Frequently moves orientation and mobility equipment across campus for various training needs. Occasionally works in outdoor weather conditions.
