RELOCATION ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE!

 

Provides direct, hands-on orientation and mobility services in both the community and agency settings. Assesses needs and teaches necessary skills, which enables consumers to function independently within their environments.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Works with other Rehabilitation Services staff to maximize the consumer's independent functioning and adjustment to visual impairment.
  2. Evaluates consumer's conceptual development and functional skills in the visual, auditory, tactile, balance and kinesthetic senses:
  3. uses assessments to develop an individual rehabilitation plan acceptable to the consumer and the sponsor.
  4. Enlists the consumer's cooperation to carry out all aspects of the individual rehabilitation plan.
  5. Maintains proper documentation to comply with contract requirements and agency procedures:
  6. prepares and submits all reports in a professional and timely manner.
  7. Fosters effective and professional communications within ABVI-Goodwill, as well as in the community:
  8. makes community presentations and represents the agency at meetings as approved and directed by the Clinical Manager;
  9. participates in agency meetings as assigned by the Clinical Manager; and
  10. relates to consumers in a manner that acknowledges the value and dignity of each individual.
  11. Contributes to the effectiveness of the agency and the department by completing all other tasks as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodations. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's Degree in Orientation and Mobility. Minimum of two years' related experience.

National professional certification required or eligibility for certification with continued employment dependent on obtaining certification within first six months of employment.

OR EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE.

 

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Able to read, analyze and interpret professional articles and technical procedures. Able to write reports and business correspondence. Communicates effectively with managers and consumers both in face to face and telephone contacts.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Able to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Able to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

If the employee drives consumers while on the job, a clean, valid New York State Driver's License must be maintained.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to communicate effectively with the consumer. The employee should have reasonable mobility and be able to handle and teach the use of long canes.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may work with the consumer in outside weather conditions approximately 50% of the time. The employee works with consumers at various sites throughout a multi-county service area.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
