The Carroll Center for the Blind empowers those who are blind and visually impaired to achieve independence and to lead a fulfilling life.  The Carroll Center serves all ages and stages of vision loss by providing campus-based rehabilitation, technology instruction, community orientation and mobility as well as itinerant education and mobility services to children.

Rehabilitation Services ($1000 SIGNING BONUS, full-time benefited position)

Job Summary
We are seeking a compassionate, high energy Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist to work in our center-based training program with consumers ranging in age from 14 to 90 years.  The Carroll Center’s comprehensive instruction integrates non-visual methods with low vision aids/techniques.  This individual will conduct client assessments and provide indoor/outdoor instruction, including the use of public transportation.  The COMS will work within a team-based approach and will be interacting with other members of the Rehabilitation Staff.  In addition, the COMS will be required to produce written assessments, document client’s progress, and present at meetings with consumers, family, and referring agency representatives.

WE ARE SEEKING an energetic and committed Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialists (COMS) to work with clients or students ages 3 – 103 with visual impairments in both school and community settings.  The COMS will conduct O & M assessments, identify travel needs, develop and implement individualized instruction plans, and evaluate and report on client or student progress. This role requires strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills. Must have knowledge of the IEP process and the ability to collaboratively serve students in cooperation with others including family, school team members and other support agencies. Experience in working with all ages and a wide range of abilities, including individuals with intellectual disabilities, is a plus.

Qualifications       

Master’s Degree in Orientation and Mobility and ACVREP (COMS) certification, or eligibility for ACVREP certification required.  2 years of COMS experience preferred.  Excellent interpersonal, organizational, written/oral skills required.  Proficient in Microsoft Office a plus.
