CESA 6 is seeking to employ a full-time Orientation and Mobility Specialist for the 2020-2021 school year, to serve school districts within the CESA 6 Region. The Orientation and Mobility Specialist will assist students with visual impairments to achieve maximum independence through instruction in safe, efficient travel within the home, school and community. Services also include instruction in compensatory skills including daily living skills, self-advocacy, and recreation or leisure skills as related to orientation and mobility and self-determination. Community-based instruction is an essential and critical component of the orientation and mobility program. The itinerant Orientation and Mobility Specialist travels to the students’ assigned schools and/or home to provide direct and/or consultative services relating to the visual impairment. This position will work with students, school personnel and parents to develop students' skills in safe and efficient travel across environments. The Orientation and Mobility Specialist is responsible for student evaluations, developing programming and implementing programming. The students range in age from birth through 21 years.

• Additional essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to:
• Participate in the referral and assessment process of visually impaired students.
• Conduct evaluations of the orientation and mobility needs of visually impaired students.
• Participate on the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) team.
• Assist in developing appropriate IEP goals and objectives.
• Recommend any modification to program or specialized services needed based on the visual impairment.
• Develop and implement an instructional plan based on identified student needs.
• Provide direct O&M services to students with visual impairments and consultations to school staff, peers, parents, and community.
• Order, distribute, and maintain canes and low vision devices related to travel.
• Team with Teacher of Visually Impaired (TVI) students and other instructional and related services personnel.
• Consult with and advise school personnel on design and provision of safe and efficient environments.
• Provide direct instructional services to students with visual impairment in evaluation areas.
• Manage all case related documentation and correspondence in a timely manner.
• Maintains data on students, services rendered and evaluation and IEP activity.
• Monitor progress and provide additional training as needed.

A solid educational background including a Bachelor's degree is required, with a Master's degree in program area is preferred. The individual hired for this position must possess the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (code 826) or be eligible to obtain this license. Additional certification in Visual Impairment (code 825) is preferred, but not required for this position. This position is itinerant, so the individual hired must have their own transportation, a valid driver's license, and be able to drive between school districts. Further, the individual hired must be able and willing to transport students using their own vehicle as necessary for the position. Additional certification (Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist) through the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP) is preferred. Thorough knowledge of orientation and mobility principles and techniques as well as applicable safety and health policies is required.
