Full Job Description

The Western Blind Rehabilitation Center (WBRC) is a residential facility located within the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). The WBRC embraces an inter-disciplinary approach to the treatment of visual impairment so that program participants receive the full complement of services. This position is located at our Menlo Park facility. The essential elements are the independent evaluation, treatment, and management if a blind and vision rehabilitation program of instruction that teaches veterans with visual impairments to utilize adaptive skills and techniques necessary to cope with the demands of everyday life. These needs constitute significant physical, emotional and social disabilities.

WBRC is especially seeking qualified individuals with CVRT or CATIS certification, or those who are eligible for these certifications.

The major duties of this position are, but not limited to:

  • Reviews and interprets of all pertinent patient documentation and records, pre-admission.

  • Serves as a Patient Coordinator, when assigned, for the rehabilitation team, coordinating the overall blind rehabilitation experiences for a successful completion, interpreting all VA and WBRC policies and directives to the patient.

  • Evaluates the patients current visual functioning utilizing specialized test and procedures to determine the extent if residual vision, functional loss, potential to benefit from low vision intervention with training and devices, and to determine individual needs as well to provide information to other professional staff for treatment planning purposes.

  • Documents in accordance with established record standards and procedures, all services performed on behalf of the patient on-going progress, issues as the occur, steps towards issue resolution, and current treatment plan.

  • Works with family members and/ or significant others to educate and counsel about all of the ramifications of visual impairment. Family members are taught to recognize and change behaviors and behavior patterns that impede blind and vision rehabilitation progress and how to cope with the psychological and social problems and their own stress.

  • Assists in the research and evaluation of new devices and techniques for inclusion into the team curriculum and helping evaluate prosthetic devices relevant to blind rehabilitation.

  • Performs research task commensurate with skills as well as submit required statistical information and data in accordance with established WBRC statistical reporting procedures.

  • Other duties as required.
