The Department for the Blind and Vision Impaired (DBVI) provides services and resources which enable Virginians who are blind, vision impaired or deafblind to achieve their desired levels of employment, education, and personal independence. This achieved by offering individualized rehabilitation services to eligible consumers and technical assistance and support to businesses, professionals, and families.

DBVI is seeking a Rehabilitation Teacher to thoroughly evaluate and instruct individuals in their homes in all areas of rehabilitation teaching which may include: communication skills (handwriting, Braille, typing, etc.), activities of daily living, household management skills, functional vision evaluations and training in the use of prescribed low vision aids, leisure activities and adjustment to disability counseling related to vision loss. You will provide resource information and advocacy. You will arrange for diagnostic exams and assess the need for low vision aids and assistive technology; determine eligibility and provide services in a timely manner; complete required program documentation, coordinate and conduct in-service trainings and professional outreach programs to provide education and awareness of DBVI services. Regular contact with Senior Citizen groups and Home Health agencies for the purpose of outreach and referral recruitment. Regular contact with ophthalmologists and optometrists to schedule appointments or to request information. Regular contact with Independent Living Centers and Area Agency on Aging for the purpose of referring individuals, coordinating services, and obtaining information. Contact, as needed, with Social Services and Health Departments for the purpose of referring individuals for services and obtaining case management information.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college/university with major study in Rehabilitation Teaching or related field.
If major is not in Rehabilitation Teaching, then applicable experience in the field may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications: 

Applicants who meet ACVREP requirements as CVR preferred. Teaching/training experience of individuals with disabilities. Skilled in adjustment to disability, assessment of functional vision, communication, Braille, household management, daily living and leisure activities. Considerable caseload management skills. Experience working with the elderly. Experience working with low vision aids and assistive technology. Experience evaluating and assessing individuals for independent living skills. Experience in community outreach and referral recruitment with Senior Citizen Groups, Home Health Agencies, Independent Living Centers, Social Services and Health Departments.
