Braille Instructor:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide initial and ongoing assessment of student’s ability to both read and write Literary Braille, using the Hatlen Center Braille assessment and/or Braille Too, or other UEB assessment upon implementation of the UEB code.
  • Determine appropriate, attainable goals based on assessment.
  • Teach tracking skills, tactile discrimination skills
  • Administer tests of both reading and writing skills.
  • Expose each student to the practical use of Braille.
  • Expose each student to the use of a Slate and Stylus.
  • Write monthly reports and progress reports for each student and deliver these reports in a timely manner as they are due.
  • Write case notes on DR consumer progress and keep the notes on the share drive in the student folder each week.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field required or 2 years in related field
  • Past accomplishments of providing instruction to the visually impaired in the areas of braille, computer technology, and independent living skills.
  • Willingness and ability to make frequent field visits, attend meetings, conferences and other job related events away from headquarters. If driving a personal vehicle, must be insurable by our agency’s automobile insurance carrier.

 

Assistive Technology Instructor:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide instruction in the use of Assistive Technology hardware, including but not limited to: personal computers with speech, refreshable Braille displays; laser printer; Braille printer; portable computer note-takers.
  • Provide instruction in the use of Assistive Technology hardware, including but not limited to: screen access programs, software that accesses Windows environment, Braille translation software, reading program for scanner system.
  • Write case notes on DR consumer progress and keep the notes on the share drive in the student folder each week.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field required. Or 2 years in related field
  • Past accomplishments of providing instruction to the visually impaired in the areas of braille, computer technology, and independent living skills.
  • Training and/or certifications in the areas of computer literacy with adaptive technology for the blind and visually impaired is preferred.
  • Willingness and ability to make frequent field visits, attend meetings, conferences and other job related events away from headquarters. If driving a personal vehicle, must be insurable by our agency’s automobile insurance carrier.

Living Skills Instructor:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  •  Assess each client’s living skills and in collaboration with the client, develop goals to address the client’s individual living skills needs.
  •  Assess each client’s financial management skills and in collaboration with the client, develop goals to address the client’s individual financial management needs. Financial management includes medical needs, pre-vocational skills and social skills.
  •  Develop and carry out a program of individualized Living Skills instruction that may include planning a grocery list, grocery shopping, apartment organization, cooking, food safety, cleaning, care-of-clothing, personal grooming and hygiene.
  • Develop and carry out a program of individualized Financial Management instruction that may include organization skills, self-advocacy, social services, Department of Rehabilitation, communication, housing, finances and budgeting, medical, pre-vocational and social skills.
