Assistive Technology Instructor Voice Over/Jaws

Department: College Success

Schedule: Full-time, 37.5 hours/week

For over 180 years, Perkins School for the Blind has provided quality educational and residential services to students who are blind, visually impaired or deafblind, empowering them to reach their maximum potential. College Success at Perkins is a new, innovative, nine month residential program that prepares high school graduates with visual impairments between the ages of 18-22 for college. Six out of ten blind students who enter college never finish and we are committed to providing a robust and experiential program that emphasizes blindness skills such as independent living and technology, as well as skills that every incoming college student needs like time management and effective study habits.  Check us out online and apply here!  

We are seeking an experienced, driven, energetic, personable, and creative Assistive Technology Instructor to join our team!

The ideal candidate:

  • Is ready and driven to make an impact on the individual students in the College Success Program, as well as the larger field of blindness education and rehabilitation.

  • Believes that blindness does not have to be a barrier to personal, academic, or career success.

  • Recognizes the unique challenges to adult living with a visual impairment, particularly for college-aged individuals, and strategies for addressing them.

  • Plans and delivers instruction in assistive technology, using flexible planning and delivery, with an ability to accommodate the different needs of a variety of students.

  • Selects, creates, and administers relevant assessments to evaluate program efficacy and student progress in collaboration with the College Success team.

  • Has experience with and a passion for developing rigorous curricula that is  person-centered and outcome driven.

  • Has experience and demonstrated skills in working with young adults, and an understanding the unique needs of this age group, as well as the transition to college.

  • Has strong interpersonal and communication skills and works well in a team setting.

  • Is knowledgeable of the resources, tools, and technology available to assist individuals who are blind and visually impaired in being maximally independent in their academic and and personal life.

  • Enjoys working in a fun, collaborative, and flexible atmosphere.

  • Stays abreast of updates and trends in the field of assistive technology, and technology in general, through research and/or involvement of local and national organizations.


Preference will be given to individuals with the following qualifications:

  • Experience & expertise in assistive technology for visual impairments

  • Current certification such as:

  • ACVREP certification ACVREP certification (CATIS,  COMS, CVRT, CLVT)

  • Appropriate Massachusetts or national certification for field of expertise

  • Massachusetts teacher certification as a Teacher of Vision Impairments (TVI)

  • Massachusetts teacher certification in related field (ie. Education, social work)

  • ASHA certification

  • NRA certification

  • Prior experience working with college age students with visual impairments who may also have additional disabilities or who are deafblind 

To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:

Expertise in Apple and PC computers, including Voice Over and Jaws skills, from introductory skills to more advanced techniques.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with young adults, both orally and in written form

  • Ability to work with diverse populations

  • Excellent organizational skills

Experience with curriculum design is preferred.
