Vocational Instructor – Assistive Technology Instructor

 

REPORTS TO:  Director of Education and Training

JOB SUPERVISES:  None

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Evaluates trainees' capacities and needs for learning, accepting supervision and completing assignments involved in the field of assistive technology.
  • Maintains the ability to use and instruct clients on all forms of assistive technology used in WSB curriculum, including screen reading software, screen magnification software, and Braille devices.
  • Maintains up-to-date skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Maintains up-to-date skills and knowledge of learning management systems.
  • Implements group and individual lesson plans for clients to learn concepts, laws, forms,  procedures, technical and general job requirements, and employer expectations and generally accepted social and work-world behaviors.
  • Emphasizes the efficient and effective use of any residual vision, tactile and other sensory modalities in the learning of course content.
  • Maintains appropriate records in the client data management system, and gathers essential data and other information.
  • Prepares monthly reports reflecting progress, problems, plans and specific recommendations for clients regarding continuation, modification or completion of training, to be communicated with case managers. Prepares other regular or special reports essential to accountability and evaluation of services.
  • Shares significant information with other Center staff and keeps the Director of Education and Training informed regarding problems or situations likely to hinder or interfere with learning and teaching.

·         Works with vendors in securing equipment for use in the Assistive Technology programs.

 

SECONDARY DUTIES AND/OR RESPONSIBILITIES:

·         Leading Assistive Technology presentations at conferences, before the campus community, and in local community events.

·         Serve as subject matter expert working with Grant Writer for new initiatives.

·         Serve as backup to other Vocational Instructors.

·         Participates in continuous improvement of the vocational programs offered by WSB.

·         Other duties as assigned.

 

 

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS:

40 hours per week

 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

A Bachelor’s degree, or four years of successful employment in the field of Assistive Technology. Teaching experience, particularly in the area of blind and visually impaired in a rehabilitation setting, is preferred.

 

SPECIAL SKILLS NECESSARY:

·         Read Braille at 10 wpm.

·         Proficiency in JAWS, ZoomText, Microsoft Office, Windows OS, Mac OS, and smart phone accessibility.

·         Familiarity of Fusion, NVDA, Narrator, and braille note takers and displays.

·         Familiarity of low vision aids.

·         Ability to clearly communicate verbally and in writing.

·         Ability to prepare lesson plans.

 

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

·         JAWS Certification

·         Zoom Text Certification

·         NVDA Certification
