Orientation and Mobility Specialist
Location:
Itinerant
Full Time

Open until filled

Empower Independence. Open the World.

For a student with a visual impairment, the world can feel small. As an Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Specialist, you are the key to expanding that world. Your work ensures that students—from infants to young adults—develop the skills, confidence, and safety necessary to navigate their homes, schools, and communities with total independence.

At CESA 5, we believe that community-based instruction isn't just an "extra"—it is the heart of what we do. You won't just be teaching in a classroom; you will be teaching in communities, in grocery stores, and across school campuses, ensuring every student has the "Rightful Presence" they deserve in their community.

We are seeking a proactive problem-solver who projects a positive image and maintains the highest standards of confidentiality.  This position can be full or part time, based on your availability and the needs of our students.

What You’ll Do:

Assess & Chart the Path

  • Conduct comprehensive O&M evaluations for new referrals and re-evaluations.
  • Identify student strengths and unique needs to determine the frequency and intensity of service.
  • Translate findings into student-centered annual goals and objectives within the IEP process.

Direct & Meaningful Instruction

  • Provide sequential, individualized instruction that enables students to travel safely and efficiently in both familiar and unfamiliar environments.
  • Prepare adapted instructional resources and instruction geared toward the student's specific functioning and motivational levels.
  • Provide "new environment" orientation for students transitioning to new buildings or class schedules.

Collaborate & Advocate

  • Partner closely with Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVI) to conduct Functional Vision Assessments and Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) assessments.
  • Act as a consultant and coach for parents, classroom teachers, and peers, ensuring O&M skills are reinforced in the home and classroom.
  • Assist in modifying environments to remove barriers to independent travel.

What Makes You a Great Fit?

  • The Credentials: You possess (or are eligible for) a valid Orientation and Mobility Specialist License through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI).
  • The Drive: You have a valid driver’s license and the ability to manage an itinerant schedule across various settings.
  • The Communication: You can facilitate complex meetings and present technical information to families and educators with empathy and clarity.
  • The Expertise: You have in-depth knowledge of special education record-keeping, IDEA compliance, and current assistive technology.

At CESA 5, you will be part of a dedicated team of special education professionals who value continuous professional growth and collaborative relationships. This position offers the unique opportunity to work with a diverse caseload (including students with multiple disabilities) and the freedom to deliver instruction where it matters most: in the real world.
