Make the Curriculum Accessible. Make the Future Bright.
As a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) at CESA 5, you are the vital link between a student’s vision and their ability to thrive in the classroom. You don't just provide services; you provide the tools, technology, and specialized instruction that allow students with visual impairments to engage fully with their world. From teaching a local preschooler their first tactile symbols to helping a high school senior master a Braille Notetaker for college, your work ensures that every student—regardless of their level of vision—has an equal seat at the table.
What You’ll Do:
Assessment & Interpretation
- Conduct Functional Vision Assessments (FVA), Learning Media Assessments (LMA), and Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) evaluations.
- Interpret complex medical eye reports to help school teams and families understand the educational implications of a student’s specific vision condition.
- Determine the most effective learning media for each student, whether it be Braille, large print, or audio.
Specialized Instruction & Support
- Provide direct instruction in the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC), including Braille (Literacy and Nemeth code), low-vision adaptations, and assistive technology.
- Manage and provide training on specialized equipment such as Braille Notetakers, text-to-speech software, and magnification devices.
- Ensure that all instructional materials (texts, tests, and classroom resources) are provided in the student's primary learning media in a timely, seamless manner.
Consultation & Team Advocacy
- Act as the resident expert for IEP teams, providing recommendations for goals, modifications, and supplementary aids.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers and diagnosticians to ensure statewide standardized testing is accessible and appropriately accommodated.
- Support families in understanding and advocating for their child’s unique learning needs.
What Makes You a Great Fit?
- The Credentials: You hold (or are eligible for) a valid Teacher of the Visually Impaired License through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI).
- The Tools: You are proficient in Braille transcribing software and current assistive technology.
- The Drive: You have a valid driver’s license and are comfortable traveling to various districts within the CESA 5 region.
- The Communication: You possess the interpersonal skills to build trust with families and the professional presence to lead IEP team discussions.
- The Mindset: You are highly organized, project a positive image, and are committed to continuous professional growth in this rapidly evolving field.
