Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI)

Provide vision instruction, services and supports, in a variety of settings and using a variety of models, designed to meet the unique needs of individual students with identified vision impairments and who have an IEP. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVI) Roles and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

A. Conduct Assessments: Conduct vision-related assessments and evaluations, including all initial assessments and re-evaluations. Provide written reports that document assessment outcomes and identify needs. Set goals and objectives, and recommend the amount and level of service needed for student to achieve Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.

B. Provide Instruction: Provide vision-related instruction and services required to meet the individualized educational needs of students in all school and other appropriate environments.

C. Communication/Collaboration/Consultation: Assist student, parents, and special and regular education personnel to understand the unique educational needs and learning characteristics of students who are blind or visually impaired.

Consult regularly with the classroom teacher, other regular and special education personnel, parents, and others to coordinate programs and services for students and communicate with classroom teachers in the identification of instructional areas in which the student requires assistance.

D. Acquisition of Materials: In collaboration with school staff, ensure that accessible materials, adaptation, modifications, and equipment needed by the students, and the classroom teacher, are provided in a timely manner to ensure the student's maximum participation in all classroom activities. Appropriate educational materials may be prepared or adapted by the TVI, or they may be obtained from educational, clerical, or transcriber services.

 E. Environmental Considerations: Assist the site administrator and school staff in making environmental adjustments for the student in the school.

F. Professional Development: Maintain awareness of current professional materials and resources and participate in appropriate professional development opportunities, and profession-related events such as WDE sponsored Meetings and Conferences.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND MENTAL ABILITY:

  • Possess a broad general knowledge of all subject areas with specific knowledge needed in contract areas.
  • Possess group dynamics and interpersonal skills.
  • Possess knowledge of physiological, psychological, emotional, and educational behavioral development of children.
  • Possess classroom developmentally appropriate management skills which include discipline as well as record keeping and assessment abilities.
  • Possess technological and computer skills.
  • Possess problem solving, imagination, patience, reasoning, creativity, judgement, and analytical abilities.
  • Possess a general knowledge of Public Law 101-476 (I.D.E.A.).

EDUCATION, LICENSE, CERTIFICATION, OR FORMAL TRAINING:

  • Possess all certificates required for the State of Wyoming.
  • Possess at a minimum a Bachelor's Degree.
  • Continue to pursue graduate level classes for professional growth.

Gillette is located in Northeastern Wyoming, about an hour away from Devils Tower to the east and the Bighorn Mountains to the west.  The community of Gillette is passionate about their children and is committed to meeting all their needs.   The Campbell County School District has 24 schools, 14 elementary schools, and two junior high schools and 2 high schools in Gillette.  There are about 8,200 students in the district with nearly 1,200 students receiving IEP services.  Gillette has a small community college and has a number of community events and celebrations throughout the year to meet the many interests of the people of Gillette and its surrounding area.  Additionally, the area boasts a wide variety of recreational activities, including boating, camping, backpacking, fishing, hunting and skiing.
