Techniques of Daily Living Instructor

Since 1947 World Services for the Blind has served Arkansas, the US, and the World's newly adult blind and visually impaired individuals find sustainable independence again. When a person loses their vision, daily skills become near impossible and need to be learned again in a new way. Our Techniques of Daily Living Instructor in our pre-vocational program, help our clients relearn daily living skills like cooking, cleaning, packing bags, household activities, and in the home tasks. How would you like to start our clients on their path to sustainable independence?

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Evaluates trainees' capacities and needs for learning, accepting supervision, and completing assignments involved in completing life skills.

  • Teaches life skills training including cooking, cleaning, and performing household activities.
  • Maintains the ability to use and instruct clients on all forms of technological assistance used in performing home tasks.
  • Maintains up-to-date skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and learning management systems.
  • Implements group and individual lesson plans for clients to learn concepts, laws, forms, regulations, policies, procedures, technical and general job requirements, and employer expectations and generally accepted social and work-world behaviors.
  • Emphasizes the efficient and effective use of any residual vision, tactile and other sensory modalities in the learning of course content.
  • Maintains appropriate records in the client data management system, and gathers essential data and other information.
  • Prepares monthly reports reflecting progress, problems, plans and specific recommendations for clients regarding continuation, modification or completion of training, to be communicated with case managers. Prepares other regular or special reports essential to accountability and evaluation of services.
  • Shares significant information with other Center staff and keeps the Director of Education and Training informed regarding problems or situations likely to hinder or interfere with learning and teaching.
  • Works with vendors in securing equipment for use in training programs.

SECONDARY DUTIES AND/OR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as backup to other Prevocational Instructors.
  • Participates in continuous improvement of the prevocational programs offered by WSB.
  • Other duties as assigned.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS:

40 hours per week, Monday through Friday: 8am to 4:30pm

 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • A college degree in the area of vocational instruction for most programs is preferred
  • Teaching experience, particularly in the area of vocational instruction is preferred
  • Specific experience in the area of vocational instruction is preferred

SPECIAL SKILLS NECESSARY:

Ability to develop and maintain appropriate professional relationships with clients, peers, volunteers, consultants and administrative staff; possesses a wholesome appreciation for the discipline and its relationship to other disciplines on the Center's staff and an appreciation of the vocational training to visually impaired people in contributing to their vocational placement. Ability to assess individual strengths and needs of clients and the ability to clarify situations and provide emotional support and encouragement to enhance the client’s progress. Willingness and ability to be flexible to changes in assignment to meet the unique needs of clients. Ability to request, accept and use supervision effectively and to grow toward greater professional independence.

Ability to organize and implement instructions without on-going dependency upon the Director of Education and Training and others. Ability to express ideas and information in clear, well-organized oral form to individuals and groups. Ability to describe clients, their progress and problems, and the ability to formulate and express relevant information in a concise, clearly written form that will be useful in evaluation and decision-making beneficial to the clients.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $35,000.00 - $39,000.00 per year
