Qualifications: KSA's, Education
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to deliver effective school-based orientation and mobility instruction. Ability to provide for the student's safety during O&M instruction and in other environments while fostering maximum independence during O&M lessons. Knowledge and skill to prepare and use equipment and materials, such as tactile maps, models, optical devices, pre-canes, GPS devices, and long canes for the development of O&M skills. Ability to provide orientation of new buildings and new class schedules to students with visual impairments as needed, including those community settings where students receive instruction. Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations, policies and procedures. Knowledge of major theories and intervention strategies with educational implications for students with disabilities. Informal and formal evaluation and interpretation skills. Effective behavior management skills and instructional techniques. Ability to develop effective treatment plans and service. Ability to document progress and relate it to the students' goals and objectives. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with school staff, parents and students. Able to maintain current certification Acquire information about current research, development, and technology by attending conferences and workshops, and by reading journals in the field of visual impairment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Required: Bachelor's and/or Master's degree Certification from the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP)
Preferred: Experience with school-aged children, including infants and preschoolers Experience with children with multiple impairments Experience working with teams
A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
Terms of Employment
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions.
