Vision Rehabilitation Therapist

SCOPE: Instruct persons with vision impairments in the use of compensatory skills and assistive technology that will enable them to live safe, productive and independent lives; and contribute to the mission of Lighthouse by ensuring the fulfillment of contracts and maximizing the positive impact on participants, guided by precedent and working within the limits of established policies.

DIRECTLY REPORTS TO: Senior Director of Programs

SUPERVISES: No direct reports

FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Provide instruction to individuals and groups in all areas of Vision Rehabilitation: Communication Skills, Personal Management, Home Management, Activities of Daily Living, Leisure and Recreation, Psychosocial Aspects of Blindness and Vision Loss, Medical Management, Basic Orientation and Mobility Skills.

2. Evaluate participants in order to establish an individualized instruction plan.

3. Prepare individual instruction plans, progress reports and final evaluations.

4. Attend meetings with Division of Blind Services.

5. Perform any range of departmental administrative assignments or special projects as requested.

1. Demonstrate by words and actions a commitment to the Lighthouse mission by advocating for and assisting persons with visual impairments to develop their capabilities to the fullest and to utilize them in the pursuits of life which are the right and privilege of all.

2. Perform or assist with any duties or operations, as required to maintain workflow and to meet schedules and quality requirements.

3. Maintain safe work area and comply with safety procedures and equipment operating rules, keeping work area in a clean and orderly condition.

4. Participate in any variety of meetings and task force groups to integrate activities, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problems and maintain specified level of knowledge pertaining to new developments, requirements, and policies.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

1. Bachelor or Master’s degree in Rehabilitation Teaching for the Visually Impaired

2. Certification in Rehabilitation Teaching by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals or eligible for certification

3. 1-3 years of experience.

4. Well-developed organizational and communication skills.

5. Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously; be detail-oriented, and possess time-management skills.

6. Must have a valid Florida driver’s license, valid insurance and the ability to be insured under the company’s vehicle insurance policy or reliable transportation for travel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Frequent travel to participant’s home, referral agencies, meetings, conferences, etc.

2. Writing and conversing in person as well as by telephone

3. Generally normal sitting, standing and walking

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

1. Computer and peripherals, word processing, spreadsheets and software programs, and standard office equipment.
