The Lighthouse Center for Vital Living is an independent, regional non-profit that has served people who are blind or visually impaired since 1919. We pride ourselves on being an innovative, multi-disciplinary, supportive and friendly team. We are a small but growing organization, currently with 21 employees.

Our mission is to foster vital lives for older adults and people with disabilities.

Services related to blindness and low vision remain the largest component of our work, but we now serve many people with other disabilities as well.  We have three main program divisions: Adjustment to Blindness; Occupational Therapy; and Assistive Technology. Our assistive technology division is growing especially quickly. We are now known as the regional expert in assistive technology.

This position would be housed in our “Adjustment to Blindness” Division, which offers the following programs:

  1. Comprehensive center-based training to people with vision loss.
  2. Orientation and mobility training in the schools.
  3. Itinerant training to people in their homes or workplaces
  4. A “Transition” program for youth with vision loss ages 14-21 to help them master the skills and confidence they need to be successful in work and life. Currently, this program consists of summer camps approximately 3 weeks of the summer, approximately 5 weekend camps per year, and remote training sessions that meet weekly.
  5. A variety of supportive services in the community, including support groups for people with vision loss, and a new audio-description collaboration with local theaters.

The professional we hire will work collaboratively with our other instructors and staff to deliver instruction in many or all the above areas.

Job Duties:

Under supervision of the Adjustment to Blindness Division Director, the professional will:

  • Perform initial assessments for clients to learn about their goals and needs.
  • Effectively teach clients a wide range of adaptive skills needed for independence, safety, and quality of life to people with vision loss or blindness.
  • Teach clients in a variety of settings, mostly in our center but also in clients’ homes, schools or workplaces across our region. Ability to travel across the Arrowhead region and possibly beyond is required. The Lighthouse has a driver for staff members who are not be able to drive.
  • Record information accurately in our database, for instance training hours. Submit timely, concise, and complete progress reports.
  • Be a positive member of the Lighthouse team, contribute to overall organizational mission, and exhibit a can-do attitude of “100% responsibility.”
  • Stay knowledgeable about a wide range of vision rehabilitation and/or orientation and mobility skills, and best practices in the field.
  • Perform other work as delegated. Because we are a small team, we often call on staff members, as they are able, to help in a variety of ways across divisions.

The Lighthouse values diversity. Individuals from a diverse racial or ethnic background and/or with a disability are strongly encouraged to apply.
