Low vision lighting is much like the weather in that it is frequently talked about but little is done to change it. The advent of light emitting diodes (LEDs) has dramatically changed lighting for cars, appliances, and increasingly in home and business lighting. LED technology is entering the lighting environment for low vision devices and a new product, the LuxIQ from Jasper Ridge, LLC offers the promise of being able to quantify individual illumination needs for reading and other near tasks. The ability to quantify this need means we can prescribe specific lighting. In this presentation we will review the current practices in lighting assessment and present the results of two independent research projects investigating the potential of the LuxIQ in clinical practice. We will also present considerations in applying research findings to clinical practice. |
