This workshop covers content designed to facilitate the growth and development of skills necessary for children to move successfully from home to school settings; and, then from school environments and activities to work and related adult responsibilities. Activities and resources for parents, teachers, and service providers working with children and adolescents who are blind or have low vision, including those with additional disabilities will be discussed. In addition, the competencies youngsters need to develop to achieve their goals in life ranging from organizational skills to self-advocacy and job seeking skills are introduced and defined. The first half of this workshop focuses on early intervention with children and families; then, on knowledge and skills youngsters need to develop and refine during their primary school years. The second half of the workshop focuses on the knowledge, skills, and abilities that secondary students and young adults transitioning into postsecondary and work environments need to master. Strategies for teaching youngsters with visual disabilities to implement strategic career/life skills are emphasized. |
