This event presents courses on current and interesting cases that involve the team approach to low vision rehabilitation. The purpose of low vision grand rounds is to emphasize and explain the multidisciplinary process of low vision rehabilitation from physician referral to low vision examination to low vision rehabilitation and support resources through the method of a patient case study. This session features Restoring the World of Words: A Guide to Prescribing Near Magnification. The ability to read is essential for daily living, and reading remains the most common goal reported by low vision (LV) patients seeking rehabilitation. This course provides a comprehensive, step-by-step review of near-vision assessment procedures and methods for determining magnification requirements for reading tasks. Attendees will explore a broad range of magnification options, including glasses, optical devices, video magnification systems, and modern adaptive technologies such as headmounted displays. Emphasis will be placed on clinical decision-making, aligning device selection with patient-specific goals, and the practical implementation of LV rehabilitation. Learning Objectives: 1. Describe the factors that affect reading performance with an emphasis on the results of research into low vision and reading performance. 2. Determine the magnification power required for reading tasks using evidence-based methods. 3. Compare and contrast the various devices (spectacles, optical devices, video magnifiers, and modern adaptive technologies) used for near magnification, and integrate patient assessment findings with device capabilities to select the most appropriate magnification solution for individual visual and functional needs. 4. Demonstrate practitioner confidence and competence in prescribing nearvision devices from simple to advanced technology. |
