Practical Low Vision Applications of Eye Diseases: A Functional Team Approach. Low vision is not defined solely by visual acuity, but by how eye disease affects a patient s ability to function in daily life. This presentation focuses on the real-world visual challenges associated with common ocular pathology conditions and provides practical, clinically relevant strategies to improve patient function and quality of life. Attendees will learn how different eye diseases impact visual performance, including contrast sensitivity, visual fields, and task-specific vision demands. Emphasis will be placed on translating clinical findings into meaningful interventions, such as appropriate use of magnification, lighting, technology, and patient counseling. Instruction Level: Intermediate. Learning Objectives: 1. Identify common functional vision deficits associated with major eye diseases. 2. Apply disease-specific low vision strategies, including magnification, lighting, contrast enhancement, and technology, to address everyday visual tasks. 3. Match appropriate low vision devices and interventions to patient needs based on diagnosis, visual function, and lifestyle demands. 4.Recognize when interdisciplinary referral (e.g., occupational therapy, orientation and mobility, educational services) is indicated to optimize patient outcomes. |
