Developed in Australia in 2001 and brought to Canada in 2006, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a nationally recognized certification course that is offered in every province and territory through the Mental Health Commission of Canada. Courses are delivered by certified MHFA instructors who have been trained exclusively by the Commission. In the broadest sense, Mental Health First Aid is the support provided to a person who may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being or a mental health or substance use crisis. Through the course, participants will develop:Peace of Mind: You ll be better able to help if someone around you, like a friend or coworker, is having a hard time. You ll feel prepared and confident to step in and offer initial support.Practical Skills: You ll be equipped with simple, actionable steps to provide support until the person can access professional help if needed.Easier Dialogue: It helps you handle brave conversations without feeling awkward or worried you ll say the wrong thing.Stronger Connections: By recognizing when someone may need support, you ll become a more compassionate friend, partner, or family member.The course is delivered in a blended learning format, including: Module One (5-8hrs): Course participants opens with self-directed learning. This includes completion of a self-directed module (2hrs) and reading of the Reference Guide (3-6hrs). Module Two (3.5hrs): Participants will participate in a facilitator led virtual classroom session. Module Three (3.5hrs):In this module participants practice applying MHFA actions to mental health or substance use crisis situations. Participants who complete all required elements will receive a certificate of completion for the course. |
