Description of CE Program/Activity
 This two-day workshop will cover the basics of Structured Discovery Cane Travel led by the staff and students of the Louisiana Tech University Professional Development and Research Institute on Blindness. We will discuss the methods of teaching, the learning theories that underpin the method, and the implications of practice. First-hand experiential learning will be the focus of the workshop with opportunities to engage in reflection of experiences and application of methods or approaches.Attendees will learn through lecture and application: The SDCT approach to teaching through first-hand experience which includes non-visual monitoring, role modeling, Socratic questioning, discovery learning opportunities, and reflective learning. The purpose of and use the tools of SDCT including learning shades and the long white flexible fiberglass rigid cane with a metal glide tip sold by the National Federation of the Blind s Independence Market for independent travel. SDCT foundational skills and techniques through experience such as open-palm and tap-slide technique, as well as echolocation using the metal tip, and increased understanding of non-visual orientation cues.
