The purpose of this skills exchange day is to bring together professionals who support individuals interested in getting a guide dog. By sharing our knowledge and expertise, we aim to ensure these individuals receive the best possible support, setting future guide dog teams up for long-term success. The day will take participants through what the journey of getting a guide dog should ideally look like with an emphasis on collaboration between orientation and mobility instructors and guide dog mobility instructors. This workshop will be an exchange of teaching skills. In the morning, we will work in small groups. The O&M instructors will teach the guide dog instructors the basics of cane technique and street crossing skills. In the afternoon we will reconfigure the small groups. We will touch on transitional skills to support a smooth transition from cane to guide dog. The guide dog instructors will teach the O&M instructors about JUNO work including how to use a JUNO walk with a client on one of their familiar routes and how to best support a guide dog team. The day will finish with dog walks. |
