Description of CE Program/Activity
Should my Patient be Driving? Addressing the Elephant in the RoomDriving is a complex function involving more than just vision and as eyecare professionals, we often face the need to advise patients regarding driving. Diagnoses causing issues with driving, size and location of scotomas, age, driving laws, bioptic driving, counseling on driving cessation, ethical issues and alternatives to driving will be explored. The first one hour covers the overall decision-making process and the second hour dwells deeper into specific differences in bioptic driving and driving after a stroke. Instruction Level: Intermediate; Prerequisites: None. Learning Objectives: 1. Identify how to tell if a patient is safe to drive. 2. Define parameters used to measure safety. 3. Describe driving options for low vision patients. 4. Identify alternative options if driving is not a possibility. 5. Determine how to counsel patients that are no longer able to drive.
