The presentation will look at the start of the wheelchair mobility programme in the UK for people wanting a guide dog and then consider how it was expanded to teaching orientation and mobility for wheelchair users. A large part of the programme involved developing a staff training programme that involved experiential learning, encouraging us to see mobility for wheelchair users in a different light. During the presentation we will discuss some of the key skills required by wheelchair users who are visually impaired and above all the difference it has made to the lives of people who have done the training. |
