When assessing the early communication skills of children and youth who are deaf-blind service providers and families can struggle to find tools outlining what a child can do. The Communication Matrix is an observational tool and behavioral inventory that pinpoints how a child at the earliest levels of communication uses multiple modes to express themselves, with or without speech or sign language. It also provides a road map to target communication skills preceding formal language expression. This workshop will provide participants an overview of administering the Communication Matrix, interpreting its results, and having conversations about data in family-friendly language. Participants will consider connectionsbetween early communication targets and the general education curriculum while observing a wide range of accessible daily activities and routines supporting early communication development in the context of trust, responsiveness, and interaction. |
