Description of CE Program/Activity
The 21st Century Child and Updating the Use of Prescribed Optical DevicesFamiliar roadblocks continue to impede access to and use of devices, especially handheld optical devices. Prescribing these tools is standard exam practice but use of devices by many young patients is not standard. Digital devices (e.g., smart phones) have brought a new screen-rich era of visual access. Explicit instruction across school years and settings is essential to help students develop proficiency and gain a sense of pride in using devices. The presenter identifies primary barriers that affect the decision on use/non-use and describes strategies to help students move from resistance to ownership of tools.Instruction Level: Intermediate; Prerequisites: NoneLearning Objectives:1.Describe unique characteristics of students with low vision and supports for building positive self-identity.2.Identify roadblocks of motivated student use across environments including frustration with a mismatch of device to user, confusion over variety of devices provided and over-reliance on single type of tool.3.Summarize strategies for overcoming students heightened sense of social cost (psychosocial concerns) as a device user and general principles of building proficiency with devices.
