Description of CE Program/Activity
The focus of the course will be on tools and techniques for teaching mathematics to students with blindness/visual impairment. Concrete instructional strategies for TVIs to support students in the general education mathematics classroom will be reviewed. Sessions will include an exploration of tools to support mathematics instruction provided by the American Printing House for the Blind as well as other instructional material providers for students who use large print and/or braille and on tactile graphics and the implications of teaching tactile graphicacy (or tactile graphic literacy) to students to support their STEM education. Common math instructional strategies found in the general education classroom and how to make those accessible to students with visual impairments. Lastly, participants will be allowed to ask specific questions that focus on the unique needs of their contexts. The workshop will cover the breadth of grades (PK to 12th) and attempt to cover content that has a highly visual component.
