This course is designed to enhance the knowledge of low vision rehabilitation professionals working with persons who have blindness or profound vision loss. Many low vision courses give focused attention to those with mild-moderate low vision loss, but this course will address the impact and special considerations of profound or total vision loss. Definitions, causes, treatment, and management options in blindness will be covered. Multiple video clips of a question/answer discussion with persons who experience the daily challenges of living without sight will be included as well as discussion of coping strategies, helpful techniques, and adaptive equipment/technology, and other resources. Learning Objectives: 1. Define the legal definitions of blindness, the etiology, treatment/management and functional implications of various blinding diseases. 2. Demonstrate a higher understanding of the challenges and day-to-day experiences of someone without vision and the strategies to be successful in a sighted world. 3. Apply the knowledge gained to improve patient care and help promote real strategies and hope to those experiencing profound vision loss. |
