Description of CE Program/Activity
 Description: Interactive presentation about the many benefits of becoming employed, particularly for recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and/or beneficiaries of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), including an overview of work incentives, as well as helpful hints for overcoming challenges such as overpayments, SSA staff in need of additional training, and ensuring continuation of healthcare coverage Instructor: Karen Shrawder Instructor s Title: Work Incentives Practitioner Instructor s Affiliation: State of California Department of Rehabilitation Primary Core or ECC Area: Transition, Career Exploration Target Audience: Individuals who are blind or have low vision, along with their family members and other supports Pre-requisite knowledge: None Materials Needed: Optional PowerPoint presentation can be provided accompanied by accessible (MS Word) version, fact sheets and forms/letters in alternate formats Lesson Plan Goal: To inform working-age adults, their families, and their social workers and vocational or rehabilitation counselors of the significance of benefits available to blind and low-vision people when entering the workforce. Learning Objectives: List the three types of Social Security benefits individuals who are blind or low vision may receive (SSI, SSDI, CDB) Name at least three work incentives that may be available to Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients Name at least three work incentives that may be available to Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) beneficiaries Describe what will happen to an SSI recipient s (Medicaid) when they become employed Explain what will happen to an SSDI beneficiary s Medicare when they become employed Explain why opening and saving money in an ABLE account is a good idea, particularly for SSI recipients
