Description of CE Program/Activity
This course provides instruction to enable a therapist to provide all aspects of low vision therapy in collaboration with a general optometrist or ophthalmologist in preparation for certification as a Low Vision Therapist using home-based, outpatient or virtual service delivery. The course of study is designed so that within the first 4 webinars, the practitioner can begin applying the information clinically, adding skills and knowledge to a level beyond entry level practice. Our approach focuses on performance, not just visual goals, using visual and non-visual strategies to enable accomplishment of individualized performance goals including reading and writing, use of the latest technology, activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living, and orientation and mobility within the ACVREP scope of practice for a low vision therapist. We include practical skills for managing neurologically based disorders and clients with cognitive and emotional disability. Overall, the series of 21 webinars have been developed to accompany the book: Whittaker, SG, Scheiman, M, Sokol-McKay, D. Low Vision Rehabilitation: A Practical Guide for Occupational Therapists. Slack: NJ, 2016. This course of is designed so that the student reads the chapter, passes a chapter test with retakes possible, and then applies the information to cases in our virtual clinic as an optional written assignment in preparation for the 1-hour weekly webinar/tutorial. The webinars review the assigned problems and questions and are limited in size to allow for individualized participation and instruction. The virtual clients in the webinars include video tapes of real patients and sometimes participants present clients from their own clinic. Our focus is on adults.
