In February 2019, Akira was three years old and stroller dependent. She is blind. Akira was enrolled two-days a week in preschool, but appeared uninterested in the people and the world around her. Her teachers made one change, they provided her with a pediatric belt cane (a wearable white cane for toddler and preschool learners). They reported that "Akira took to the belt cane like a duck to water." By May, she was walking on her own, in her final IFSP meeting they increased the number of days of preschool.Join us to learn more about the pediatric belt cane and the over 1,000 toddlers and preschoolers with visual impairments in 17 countries and 45 states who are wearing them right now. This discussion will provide results on research studies and video examples (before and with belt cane footage) that indicate how/which students with visual impairments benefit from wearing their belt canes. |
