Description of CE Program/Activity
Description: Many teachers of students with visual impairments within the field of Early Intervention also carry a full caseload of school-age students. During the course of their workday, they must switch hats from a student-centered educational model to a family-centered educational model. These formats have several key differences, such as program planning, teaching strategies, and service delivery. The style of family interactions may also differ as one switches hats from one educational model to another. During this session, a panel of vision professionals will discuss the challenges faced in this dual role and offer suggestions based on their combined experience.Instructor: Sara Edwards and Julia BowmanInstructor s Affiliation: Illinois School for the Visually Impaired (ISVI)Primary Core or ECC Area: CompensatoryTarget Audience: Professionals and caregiversLesson Plan Goal: The webinar will focus on the differences and challenges a teacher of students with visual impairments faces while teaching in the schools and in Early Intervention. The panel of professionals will share their experiences and offer suggestions as to how one can successfully switch hats from teaching in the school and teaching in the home. Learning Objectives: The participant will identify three differences between a student-centered educational model and a family-centered model. The participant will identify three challenges vision professionals face when moving from teaching in the classroom versus teaching in the home. The participant will identify one teaching strategy for the student-centered educational model and one teaching strategy for the family-centered model. The participant will review the importance of family interactions while teaching students with visual impairments in the home enrolled in an Early Intervention program.
