 Description: This session will provide a general introduction about what braille including how it is learned and how it is used in everyday life to promote a productive and independent life. Bill and Deborah will engage in a point/counterpoint discussion of the benefits versus issues related to learning braille as an older person new to vision loss. They will discuss and provide resources related to learning braille. Participants will also review the benefits and potential barriers related to learning braille as an older person new to vision loss. Learning Objectives: Participants will Be able to describe how braille is learned by adults Be able to describe the difference between functional literacy and academic literacy for adults with acquired vision loss Identify 3 psychosocial impacts of aging and vision loss on acquiring new literacy skills after vision loss Participants will be able to describe 2 benefits and 2 potential barriers related to learning braille as an older person new to vision loss.
