In the end, nothing beats good cane travel skills. However, in life, we want to find things that will help us in our endeavor to do great things. Technology can help us or hinder us depending on how it is used. As technology continues to advance and integrate into every aspect of our lives, it is important that we learn to maximize its efficiency while still maintaining ones personal self-efficacy, problem solving skills and travel skills. This presentation will discuss best practices for integrating technology use in orientation and mobility instruction. Specific apps will be discussed as well as proper implementation of these apps. Outcomes:1)Participants will understand the foundational travel skills required to use technology in orientation and mobility2)Participants will get real-life examples of how these types of apps and technology can be utilized while traveling3)Participants will come away with strategies for implementing Structured Discovery Training with their students while integrating technology and cane travelJoanne Gabias graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a Masters in Guidance and Counseling with certifications in Orientation and Mobility, (NOMC), Rehabilitation Teaching for the Blind (NCRTB) as well as Unified English Braille (NCUEB). Ms. Gabias received her Bachelors from the University of British Columbia in Linguistic Anthropology with a minor in Spanish. Ms. Gabias has been in the field of Rehabiliation for over 6 years. Ms. Gabias is currently the Operations Manager at SAAVI Services for the Blind statewide. Ms. Gabias teaches using Structured Discovery principles. In addition, Ms. Gabias is a member of the NOMCT committee of the National Blindness Professional Certification Board. |
