Description of CE Program/Activity
According to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, all students need meaningful mathematics with appropriate tools. The acquisition of mathematical skills can be more difficult for students with visual impairments due to the abstract nature of many essential concepts and the highly visual presentation of the subject (Kapperman, Heinze, & Sticken, 2000). It is particularly important for students with visual impairments to be exposed to the use of multiple mathematics strategies and tools, including use of the abacus, compass, protractor, algebra tiles, and spatial reasoning devices. This webinar will explore a variety of adapted mathematics tools and their use. Participants will identify seven adapted mathematic tools for use with individuals with visual impairments. Participants will differentiate adapted tools paired with various mathematic concepts. Participants will describe techniques for modifying instructional methods in mathematics for individuals with visual impairments.
