Participants will gain knowledge of the following as it relates to preschoolers with visual impairment and their families. 1.The effects of visual impairment on the development, learning, and behavior of the preschooler 2.The needs of preschoolers with vision loss in the group setting 3.Curricula, specialized equipment and materials 4.Assessment methods and tools for use with this population5.Assessment of functional vision and methods to encourage further development of functional visual skills 6.The IEP process and working as a team member7.Resources and services for preschoolers 8.Models of service delivery for preschoolers9.Appropriate classroom management skills including use of space, time, instructional methods, materials, curricula, equipment and technology10.How to adapt the early childhood curriculum to the unique needs of this population (i.e., art, music, play, literature, behavior, science, movement, social, concepts, language, daily care)11.Methods of instruction for preschool children including physical and sensory stimulation, activity based, experiential, and parent mediated12.How to help parents remain involved with their child's program13.How to encourage independence in the preschooler with vision loss14.How to facilitate appropriate social behavior and peer interaction15.Compensatory skill areas and the expanded core for BVI (i.e., orientation and mobility, braille, listening skills, technology, career awareness, etc.)16.Early literacy17.Selection and transition to the elementary school setting18.Special needs of preschoolers with additional disabilities |
