Part 1: Ethical ThinkingHuman beings are magnificent creatures. We are brilliant in our capacity to problem solve, reason, and think through challenging situations. As humans we are also flawed. Our experiences and prejudices often interfere with our ethical thinking in a manner that escapes our awareness. In this course we will examine the roadblocks we must overcome to be more ethical in our thinking. We will also explore methods to clarify decision making.Course Objectives Examine cognitive dissonance and explore the role rationalizations play in our decision making Understand the rules and complications to ethical thinking that occurs in our profession Identify CRC rules as they apply to various decisions Practice a new strategy for clarifying decision makingPart 2: Ethics and BoundariesPersonal Boundaries, Social Media and EthicsVR professionals are confronted with situations that test their boundaries every day. Using the CRC Code of Ethics, we will examine the ethical complexities inherent in both face-to-face counselor/consumer interactions and virtual interactions, such as social networking and email. Through case study and discussion we will explore approaches for maintaining respectful boundaries with those we serve.The Ethics of Counseling Across CulturesWe are all shaped by our life experiences. Our personal values and those of the people we serve have a significant impact on the design and delivery of services. Through case study and discussion we will investigate the ethical challenges of working with different cultural groups.
