Abstract:Tactile Maps Automated Production (TMAP) is a project promoting independent travel and tactile map literacy for blind people. TMAP uses a web-based app to generate map files that can be downloaded and embossed. The app utilizes open source data and design parameters to ensure the output is a legible, uncluttered, usable tactile map. Greg will provide an overview on the features and design of TMAP and Steve will discuss the use of TMAP as an important tool for teaching environmental literacy for transition-aged students, providing case examples of the use of TMAPs for building environmental literacy, self-determination, and O&M related goals using remote instruction.Learning objectives:Participants will gain an understanding of TMAPs as an open source tool that they may use with clients and students for building environmental literacy.Participants will explore specific use cases where TMAPs were used with transition aged youth using distance based instruction.Participants will engage in active discussion around accessing and exploring this tool for their students and clients.
