The Road to College: Introduction to College Readinessand Executive Functioning: Leslie Thatcher, EdM the foundingDirector of College Success @ PerkinsThe road to college for BVI students is complex, and the target, college,looks very different today, demanding skills that we need to teach them, yetcurrently, there are not any guides for what to aim for skill wise, and whenand how to help a student recognize if he or she is really ready forcollege . Join this session to learn about a new tool being developed, theCollege Readiness Checklist, covering all elements of the ECC, includingspecific guidance for the development of both Technology Skills andExecutive Functioning skills, and how they are essential and interrelated inour current educational landscape. We will discuss the value of helping ourstudents to practice (and occasionally, to fail), in order to strengthen theirself-awareness, resilience, and ability to self-advocate effectively, as theyprepare to learn and live independently. We will introduce the basics ofexecutive functioning, the phases of readiness to change behavior, how torecognize them, in order to set up and take advantage of teachablemoments |
