According to the Health Policy Institute at Georgetown University, Cultural Competence in Healthcare [or related fields such as Blind/Vision Rehabilitation] is defined as the ability of providers and organizations to effectively deliver health care services or in this case, vision rehabilitation services, that meet the social, cultural, and linguistic needs of patients [veterans, clients, students]. Subsequently, the practitioner serving individuals who are blind or visually impaired must also ensure that they are equipped with the appropriate attitude, motivation, and skill-set to provide effective training strategies that address the unique needs of individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Service delivery should be provided in the most respectful and dignified manner, even when values, beliefs, and behaviors diverge from the practitioner. Please note, time will be available for questions and discussion. |
