Medical technology has advanced and more babies are born with disabilities than ever before. What can the eye care provider do to provide appropriate care for this underserved population? An overview of common diagnoses in the special needs population and their visual diagnoses will be discussed. Methods to complete a functional vision evaluation, which will provide much needed information for teachers, caretakers and providers, will be described. Practical recommendations to allow the child to optimize vision will be discussed.1. Identify the four leading diagnoses of children with special needs and their associated visual diagnoses. 2. Identify the leading causes of visual impairment in the US. 3. Describe the different types of Cortical Visual impairment. 4. Analyze a case of a special needs child and describe the assessment and recommendations provided to the child's family and teacher. 5.
