Description of CE Program/Activity
Older persons are susceptible to lung diseases that make breathing difficult and may cause other problems with cognition, endurance, and the ability to manage activities of daily living. This course reviews the causes and symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), along with treatment and strategies for service providers and consumers. Although there are a number of lung diseases that challenge older adults, the most common are chronic bronchitis and emphysema. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (2017), more than 15 million Americans have been diagnosed with COPD, and several additional millions have the disease and do not know it. Learning objectives: recognize the causes, symptoms and treatments for chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases; and recognize the services and strategies providers can offer to consumers who have COPD.
